Oxford hosting USTA adult tennis state event
Published 4:29 pm Friday, August 28, 2015
Beginning this morning, more than 500 tennis players and supporters will convene in Oxford for the USTA 40/55 Mixed State Championships. This will be the fifth consecutive year that Oxford has hosted, but the first year since the new FNC Tennis Center — John Leslie Courts has been dedicated and fully functional. Teams from all over the state play district matches over the summer to determine who will advance to state and compete for the opportunity to advance to the Southern Sectionals.
Oxford, under the leadership of the Oxford Park Commission and the Oxford Community Tennis Association, was awarded the right to host based on a number of requirements and desires. These include tennis court facilities, operational excellence, community support, a desirable location and amenities such as hotels, restaurants and shops for the players and families to utilize.
In each of the previous four years, Oxford merchants enjoyed a spike in activity on a traditional slow weekend, while the city receives great visibility and compliments from our many visitors. We have many to thank, from city and county leaders to business sponsorships. Recognition will be provided in both signage at FNC John Leslie and in the future on the OCTA website. Play will commence today at 8 a.m. and run through mid-day Sunday. The public is welcome free of charge.
This is another opportunity for Oxford to demonstrate what makes us unique, so please welcome our guests and if you see someone in need, offer an encouraging hand.
