Ole Miss head basketball coach Kermit Davis will welcome Penny Hardaway to the Pavilion this winter.
The Ole Miss basketball team announced Monday they will host the Memphis Tigers on Dec. 5. Next season’s matchup will be the second time to two programs have met since 2015.
Ole Miss traveled to Memphis and fell to the then-No. 16-ranked Tigers by one point last November inside the FedEx Forum. December’s game will be the first time Memphis has played in Oxford since December 2016.
Following the Rebels’ loss to the Tigers last season, Davis spoke about the need for the two teams to begin playing regularly once again.
“It’s a great rivalry game and it needs to be played every year,” Davis said. “That’s why I called Penny and he agreed quickly. … It needs to be played every year and as long as I’m the coach, it will be every year.”
Monday’s announcement was part of the Rebels slowly releasing the non-conference portion of their 2020-21 schedule over the last few weeks.
The Rebels’ season will begin on Nov. 10 when they host New Orleans. Other games announced so far include North Carolina A&T (Nov. 15), Charleston Southern (Nov. 18).
Recent transfer Dimencio Vaughn will play his former team, Rider University, when they come to the Pavilion on Dec. 1
During Thanksgiving Break, the Rebels will be making their first trip to the Cayman Islands to take part in the Cayman Classic on Nov. 23 through 25. Other teams in the field include Miami, Kansas State, Oregon State, Nevada, Western Kentucky, La Salle and the University of Northern Iowa.
