Oxford revises drug test policy

The city of Oxford is revising its drug testing policy.
Last week during a work session, the Oxford Board of Aldermen voted to amend the city’s drug-testing policy to allow prospective non-safety-sensitive employees with a legal medical marijuana card to test positive for THC without disqualification for employment.
Currently, employees are required to undergo pre-employment drug screening, with some positions eligible for random tests depending on state laws.
Post-accident or injury testing is also required.
The proposed update keeps preemployment testing, but if an applicant with a valid medical marijuana card tests positive for THC, it won’t be held against them in non-safety-sensitive roles.
This change would apply to both pre-employment and random testing for those roles. However, the policy will still permit “reasonable suspicion” testing for all employees, regardless of position or medical card status.
Safety-sensitive positions include first responders, fire and police personnel, CDL drivers, heavy equipment operators, and utility linemen.
In the coming weeks, each job’s duties will be reviewed to confirm if they fit this category.
