A Lafayette County man has been arrested and charged with murder.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at 11:25 p.m. Thursday to a home in the 100 block of Heights Drive in response to a domestic disturbance call.

When they arrived, they discovered Charlene Cook, 58, of Lafayette County dead at the home in an apparent shooting.

Charles Reifers, 76, also of Lafayette County, was taken into custody without incident and charged with first-degree murder.

He is being held at the Lafayette County Detention Center pending a bond hearing on Saturday.

“The loss of life is always tragic, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” said Lafayette County Sheriff Joey East. “I want to commend our deputies for their swift and professional response, which ensured the situation was brought under control without further incident.”

The sheriff’s office said no other details will be released at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
