Oxford Mayor Robyn Tannehill and the Board of Aldermen proclaimed JJ Pegues the Honorary Mayor of Oxford for Nov. 29, coinciding with the highly anticipated Egg Bowl.
“Everybody in here knows this fella,” Tannehill said Tuesday during the Board’s regular meeting.
Tannehill mentioned Pegues’ pivotal role in leading the Oxford Chargers to the 6A state championship in 2019.
“He has made us proud on the football field and off the football field,” she said.
Tannehill noted that Pegues’ nickname, the “Mayor of Oxford,” has become a familiar moniker during Ole Miss football broadcasts.
“Each time I watch Ole Miss football on TV and hear the announcers refer to the ‘mayor of Oxford,’ they’re talking about JJ,” she said.
During Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting, Tannehill read the official proclamation naming Pegues Honorary Mayor. The proclamation highlighted Pegues’ impressive achievements both on and off the field, including his involvement with the Lafayette-Oxford-University community.
Since joining the Ole Miss Rebels as a defensive lineman in 2022, Pegues has been a beacon of community service. He is an active member of the SEC Leadership Council, the SEC Community Service Team, and the Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Last fall, Pegues organized a community-wide school supply giveaway.
His dedication to service earned him a spot on the preseason watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, awarded annually to the FBS player who excels in community service, leadership and performance.
