Keerthin Karthikeyan, with BSA Troop 45, developed an “American Flag Retirement Drop Box” for his Eagle Scout Project last month.
The U.S. Flag Code specifies that “the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
According to Flags USA, the American flag is to be mended and cleaned regularly to prevent or slow signs of wear and tear. Only when the flag is beyond mending should it be burned.
The first flag retirement ceremony took place on June 14.
The box can be found in the lobby of the Oxford Police Department at 715 Molly Barr Road. Oxford Fire Department is set to perform all flag retirement ceremonies.
Those who have an American Flag that has served well but is worn and needs to be properly retired can bring the flag to OPD during regular business hours.
