OXFORD — Another holiday season has come and gone and it was a relatively calm one for the Lafayette County Sheriff’s department. The sheriff’s department made a total of six arrests from Dec. 21-31.

That number is down from the 14 arrests the sheriff’s office made during the same period in 2017.

“The holidays from Thanksgiving to Christmas to New Year’s was absolutely wonderful for us,” Major Alan Wilburn of the sheriff’s office said. “We have very few break ins. We beefed up patrol in certain areas we felt were crime areas. We hit the social media with be aware (messages). We told people if you leave tell your neighbor, call the sheriff’s office and we’ll have extra patrol for your house. Things like that and it worked out pretty good for us.”

Over the Christmas weekend (Dec. 21-25) there were two burglaries reported, an auto burglary and a residential burglary on County Road 202.

The arrival of 2019 was celebrated relatively calm in Lafayette County but there were five arrests taking place during Dec. 30-Jan. 1. One arrest was for being drunk in public and four others were for Driving Under the Influence and careless driving. Those were the only DUIs reported by the sheriff’s office between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The soggy conditions on New Year’s Eve were credited with the assist in having a quiet night on the county roadways.

“(New Year’s Eve) was great,” Wilburn noted. “I think the rain helped out a little bit in keeping everything calmed down.”

There were also two sexual assaults reported and three reports of domestic violence.
