The city of Oxford is considering extending its contract with the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society, and that’s a good thing.

Noting many improvements in how the OLHS board is run, Oxford alderman Janice Antonow said she is recommending that the city board approve a contract with OLHS to provide its animal control services through the end of the fiscal year, which ends on Sept. 30, 2018.

Considering OLHS has many years of experience with animal control in this community and considering that OLHS has been an excellent partner to this community for many years, we think this relationship is a a natural fit, and it should continue.

A non-profit is not unlike other organizations in that not everybody will be happy with how things are done all the time. All organizations need to tweak and improve how they are run continually. Thus, we have no doubt that assessments and improvements by the OLHS in recent months in how the non-profit is run will be beneficial in the long run.

We also know that the board and staff of the OLHS care deeply about animals and giving the best and most humane care possible in our community. Moving forward with this win-win relationship is a good thing.
