“Tax-Free Weekend” at Square Books in Oxford

To coincide with the Mississippi Second Amendment Tax-Free Weekend Holiday for guns, archery equipment and ammunition, Square Books is removing taxes from their books to celebrate another: the First.
From Aug. 25 through Aug. 27, the shop will have a 7-percent discount on their stock. This cut nullifies the amount of sales tax that customers would normally have to pay.
“This promotion celebrates the great traditions of free expression and free press in our nation,” a press release from the store read. “We encourage the Mississippi legislature to one day initiate a similar holiday for the sale of books.”
General Manager Lyn Roberts said Square Books first heard about the Second Amendment tax holiday last year when the idea for a tax-free weekend of their own hit them.
“Being a bookstore, when we learned of this holiday, we naturally thought of the First Amendment, which we exercise every day,” Roberts added. “Square Books thought it should be celebrated as well, so we ran a 7-percent discount that Saturday. For 2017, we had time to plan and so have been able to promote our celebration of another of the protections afforded in the Bill of Rights.”
Square Books is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and this Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
