Given that Ole Miss’ softball program has barely tasted the NCAA Tournament, playing host in the sport’s postseason has never been close to reality for the Rebels.

Until now.

Ole Miss will play in the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in program history next weekend, and the Rebels, fresh off their first-ever Southeastern Conference Tournament championship, are vying to host a four-team regional for the first time ever. The tournament field will be unveiled during a selection show tonight at 9 on ESPN.

The tournament’s top 16 seeds are awarded regional host sites, and the Rebels, who have put together back-to-back 40-win seasons for the first time in school history, began the week No. 23 in the NCAA’s RPI rankings. That was before Ole Miss knocked off three top-15 RPI teams — LSU, Alabama and No. 1 Florida — during its run to the SEC Tournament championship.

CollegeSportsMadness.com projects Ole Miss to host as the tournament’s No. 15 overall seed. The top eight seeds would host super regionals if they win their regionals.
