This fall, the AAUW-Oxford Branch focusing on gender issues in local and state politics and will host a Voter 411 event to help educate voters.

Karen Kate Kellum, with the American Association of University Women, said in the group’s discussions, members discovered many individuals were confused about some of the voting laws and practices in our community. For example, many didn’t understand that “write in” votes are only counted if one of the candidates is deceased. And others believed that their ballot was invalided if they “skipped” one of the races.

To help remedy this, the group invited Baretta Mosley, Lafayette County’s circuit clerk, to talk with voters.

The Voter 411 event will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lafayette County and Oxford Public Library’s auditorium.

Mosley will highlight:

• the conditions under which “write in” votes get counted

• why those living in city limits also vote for supervisors

• are voters required to vote in each of the races on a ballot

• types of identification that can be used

• finding where to vote

• legibility of signature

Voter registration forms also will  be available. Oct. 3 is the last day to register to vote for the November election.
