All but one Oxford alderman have qualified to run in June to retain their set on the Board of Aldermen.
At-large Aldermen Mary Martha Crowe and Brian Hyneman, Ward 3, completed their paperwork last week to qualify. Aldermen Mark Huelse, Ward 2; Kesha Howell Atkinson, Ward 4; Preston Taylor, Ward 5; and Jason Bailey; Ward 6 qualified the week before along with Mayor Robyn Tannehill.
As of Friday morning, only one non-incumbent candidate has qualified thus far. William Summers Mayo qualified on Jan. 7 to run for Ward 1 aldermen. Currently, Rick Addy is the sitting alderman for Ward 1 but has not yet filed papers to run.
The qualification period for the June election started on Jan. 2 and ends on Jan. 31.
To qualify, candidates must have lived in the ward where they are seeking election for alderman for at least two years and have not been convicted of a felony. If they are running as a Republican or Democrat they will pay a $10 fee when filing their paperwork at the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall.
Independent candidates do not pay a fee but will need 50 signatures from any qualified voter in Oxford.
Absentee voting for the primary begins on Feb. 17. The general election is on June 3. There will not be a runoff for the general election. The most votes will win.
Qualification packets are available at City Hall and the Lafayette County Clerk’s Office; however, they must be turned in at the Clerk’s Office at City Hall.
