The Oxford Police Department pledged on social media Wednesday to post a monthly reminder about Jimmie “Jay” Lee until justice is served.
Lee, an active member of Oxford’s LGBTQ+ community and Ole Miss student, went missing on July 8, 2022. Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington was charged with Lee’s murder despite Lee’s body never being recovered.
In December, after 10 days, Herrington’s trial ended in a mistrial after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict.
“On July 8, 2022, Jay Lee was tragically taken from our community. We will continue to share this message on the 8th of every month until justice is served for Jay Lee and his family. Our commitment to finding Jay Lee has never wavered. If you have any information, please contact the Oxford Police Department at 662-232-2400 or Crimestoppers at 662-234-8799. Every tip matters,” OPD posted on its social media sites Wednesday.
District Attorney Ben Creekmore told the media he planned to move forward with a new trial; however, a new trial date has not yet been scheduled, according to court records.
Herrington has been out on a $250,000 bond since December 2022.
