Our View: Walk of Lights

Visit Oxford is the city’s department dedicated to attracting visitors to dine in our restaurants and stay in our hotels, supporting local businesses and their employees.

While the town already thrives during football games and the Double Decker Arts Festival, Visit Oxford frequently collaborates with community partners to encourage tourism throughout the year—not just on a few busy weekends.

Recently, they demonstrated their commitment to local residents as well.

Holly Jolly Holidays at mTrade Park, managed by Visit Oxford, features ice skating and, new this year, the Walk of Lights. A new ice skating rink was built at mTrade Park to host the event, which was previously held at the Old Armory Pavilion.

Ice skating costs $15 per person, with ticketing handled by a third-party contractor. The Walk of Lights, a new addition this year, offers a beautifully decorated, winding path through the park illuminated with Christmas lights—a truly enchanting holiday experience.

However, shortly after the event opened, some residents expressed their disappointment on social media about the $15 per-person price for the Walk of Lights (children aged 2 and under were free). Many felt the cost was too high for local families. For a family of four, walking through the lights would cost $60—or approximately $100 to participate in both activities.

Visit Oxford took this feedback to heart and recently announced a price adjustment. On Wednesdays and Thursdays through Jan. 5, the Walk of Lights admission is discounted to $5 per person, and children under 6 years old will be admitted free from Wednesday to Sunday.

We applaud Visit Oxford for listening to the community and making this change. The Walk of Lights is an experience that all Lafayette County children should have the opportunity to enjoy, and now, more families can take part. Isn’t that what the spirit of Christmas is truly about?
