New traffic calming measure for Hathorn Road approved

The Oxford Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday to install curb bulb-out devices, also known as “curb chockers,” along Hathorn Road, particularly around the sharp curve near Campus Walk and North Ridge Condos.

This area has been a concern for residents due to speeding vehicles, which prompted a speed study in late 2023.

The results showed that 85% of drivers were clocked at around 31 mph while entering and exiting the curve. The city installed flashing 20 mph speed limit signs in both directions leading to the curve, with additional enforcement requested from the Oxford Police Department. However, a follow-up study revealed that speeds had only slightly decreased to 30 mph, which remains a concern.

City Engineer John Crowley explained that while 30 mph may not seem excessive, it’s a significant speed when navigating a 90-degree curve, making it difficult for drivers to spot pedestrians.

“We’re trying to slow people down,” Crowley said. “The curb bulb-outs give the perception of narrowing the road.”

Mayor Robyn Tannehill said the idea is a creative solution that, if successful, could be applied to other areas in the city where traffic calming is needed.

The project is estimated to cost around $15K-$20K.
