Oxford may have struggled during the non-district season but got off to a great district start with a 48-28 win over Horn Lake.
The first half was a struggle as the teams remained within one score of each other. The 28-28 halftime score proved what kind of a 7A battle was taking place.
However, the second half belonged to the Chargers as they shut out the Eagles.
Oxford tied the score at seven when quarterback Drew Dean found junior receiver Kingston Gregory on a 29-yard pass with 6:54 on the first quarter clock.
Kicker Michael Thompson cut the lead 14-10 on a 42-yard field with 1:07 left in the first quarter.
After Horn Lake fumbled the kickoff return, Oxford’s Jai Johnson recovered the ball on the Horn Lake 15-yard line. Oxford took the lead on a Dean one-yard run with nine seconds off the second quarter clock. With Thompson’s extra point, the Chargers led for the first time 17-14.
On the next play Horn Lake scored to go back ahead 21-17. Thompson kicked another field goal to pull within one, 21-20, with six minutes left in the half.
It was Horn Lake’s time again with four minutes to go on a rushing touchdown for the 28-20 lead. With under a minute to go, Oxford tied the game at 28 on a touchdown and two-point conversion.
Thompson had two more field goals in the second half to help put the game away.
The Chargers (2-4) will travel to Desoto Central (4-2) who defeated Southaven 35-21 Friday, Oct. 11.
