The closure is necessary to accommodate the crane and related equipment needed for the installation.

The crane, which is essential for lifting the HVAC unit, will arrive on three 18-wheelers at midnight.

“Best case scenario, we’ll be done by 8 a.m. Sunday, worst case by noon, so it should be clear by lunchtime,” said City Engineer John Crawley.

Oxford Police Chief Jeff McCutchen said signage will be placed on North Lamar on Friday

alerting folks of the closure. Vehicles must be removed from the area between Monroe and Jefferson by 11 p.m. on Saturday.

Any vehicle left on North Lamar after 11 p.m. on Saturday will be towed, McCutchen said.

“As soon as we’re notified that the road can reopen, we’ll do so immediately,” McCutchen said.

Local businesses along North Lamar will be personally notified by a county representative about the road closure.

The Board of Aldermen approved the request from the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors to close the road during a special meeting Thursday afternoon.

Mayor Robyn Tannehill apologized to the Board members for the short notice.

“The county just ran into an issue with a contractor that thought he could put the crane behind the building but it wouldn’t fit,” she said.
