One member of the Oxford High tennis team has tested positive for COVID-19, while a handful of teammates are awaiting test results.

Oxford High School Director of Activities Mike Martin confirmed the positive result with the EAGLE on Wednesday evening.

The player who tested positive is currently in a 14-day quarantine, according to Martin. The six other players who were found to have come into contact with the individual who tested positive were tested for COVID-19, and if the results come back negative, they will be able to rejoin the team on June 22.

If any of the players’ results come back positive, those players will begin their 14-day quarantine as per Oxford High School’s guidelines and protocols, which were put into place when athletics teams resumed activities on June 1.

The entire tennis team has taken the week off from voluntary workouts out of precaution, according to Martin, and will resume on June 22.

“Tennis could have kept going, but I spoke with coach (Louis) Nash and he told me one week off isn’t going to make or break them. So, that is what we’re doing,” Martin said.

Martin confirmed all other Oxford sports are “full go,” as they are midway through their third week back. All sports took part in a two-week acclimation period to get players back into shape after high school sports were shut down for nearly three months due to COVID-19.
