The confederate statue on the University of Mississippi campus was vandalized between 5 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 30.
A currently unidentified white male was arrested on the scene by the University Police Department.
The words “spiritual genocide” were spray-painted in black on every side of the statue, accompanied by blood red handprints.
The University released a statement at 9 p.m. Saturday night, but declined to formally identify the suspect at this time.
“University Police Department officers took a suspect into custody today (Saturday, May 30) related to a vandalism incident of a monument on the Circle,” the statement read. “UPD is continuing to investigate. Because the investigation is ongoing, we cannot comment any further at this time.”
This is a developing story.
