After nearly a year serving as Oxford’s interim police chief, Jeff McCutchen will officially become the city’s permanent chief next week.

The City of Oxford announced on Thursday there will be a swearing-in ceremony held for McCutchen at the City Hall courtroom on Monday at 4 p.m. The ceremony is open to the public.

Last January, Joey East stepped down as OPD’s chief to focus his efforts on his campaign for Lafayette County’s next sheriff. East won in November and was sworn in on Dec. 27, leaving the City of Oxford with the task of finding its next chief of police.

McCutchen filled in as interim chief since last February, and was officially named the next OPD chief by Mayor Robyn Tannehill on Nov. 26. He has served 17 years in law enforcement, and has been OPD’s Operations Major since 2014, overseeing patrols, investigations and Special Event Details.

Prior to being Operations Major, McCutchen also held titles of Supervisor over Investigations, Patrol Officer, DUI Officer and SWAT Commander.
