Ole Miss’s top quarterback commit for the 2020 recruiting class is no more.

Robby Ashford, a four-star rated dual-threat quarterback, announced earlier this week that he would be decommitting from Ole Miss and opening up his recruitment.

“After taking some time to think things over, to pray, and to speak with my parents, I have decided to decommit from Ole Miss,” Ashford said in a statement on Twitter. “Thanks to the coaches that have helped me through this recruiting process. I wish you all the best. As of now I am opening up my recruitment. Thank you.”

Ashford missed most of his 2019 senior season after suffering a fractured foot in early September.

The decommitment doesn’t necessarily mean that Ashford will without-a-doubt not be at Ole Miss next season. It just means he’s considering other options.

Before committing to Ole Miss on June 24, Ashford had been weighing offers from Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Georgia, among others.

As former Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke is now on Kirby Smart’s coaching staff at Georgia, that would seem like a potential boost for the Bulldogs’ recruitment of Ashford.

With the announcement that Rebels quarterback Grant Tisdale would be withdrawing his name from the transfer portal and competing with Matt Corral and John Rhys Plumlee for the quarterback job this spring, the Ole Miss quarterbacking room is already quite full. That isn’t even considering the former three-star Kinkead Dent, who redshirted this past season.

Ashford could still end up a Rebel, but for now, his options are open.
