The Tutwiler Quilters will have hundreds of hand–quilted items for sale this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Oxford.
The Quilters are a program of the Tutwiler Community Education Center in Tutwiler, Miss., and the organization was established in November 1988
Attendees will be able to purchase gifts ranging from $5 to $400. The quilters will have hand-quilted potholders, placemats, table runners, bags in many sizes and quilts to suit birthday, wedding and Christmas gift needs. New items to be included this sale are bowl cozies, coasters, Christmas ornaments, baked potato bags, wine bags and wristlets. The guild’s bestselling baby quilts will be available for purchase, too, as will Sister Mary Bertoli prints.
Elizabeth Payne and Kenneth Rutherford have hosted this sale for more than 15 years at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, located at 113 South 9th Street.
“This is one of our best shows and sales,” Melanie Powell, Tutwiler Community Education Center Executive Director, said in a recent news release. “We love to see our friends from the Oxford area, too.”
The Tutwiler Quilters project helps preserve the distinctive African-American quilting style and tradition of the Mississippi Delta as a cottage industry. The Quilters earn 80 percent of the sale price to support themselves and their families.
Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary organized the Tutwiler Community Education Center in 1987. Quilted items are available for sale at the center, in downtown Tutwiler, each weekday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information about the Tutwiler Quilters and the sale in Oxford, call 662-345-8393 or visit www.tutwilercommunityeducationcenter.org.
