Well over 1,300 entries were accepted for the 119th U.S. Women’s Amateur Tournament at Old Waverly Golf Club, and Conner Beth Ball, of the Ole Miss women’s golf team, made the 156-player field.
To qualify for the tournament, Ball shot a one-under 71 at Brookfield Country Club in Georgia, one of eight golfers in that field to make the amateur.
For Ball, the tournament is nearly a homecoming. Taking place at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss., Ball’s family is from nearby Starkville. It’s a course she’s familiar with and has played on several occasions through the amateur ranks.
“I feel extremely grateful to be able to play in another USGA event,” Ball said. “It’s always nice to have the hometown feel when you’re playing in tournaments, especially one of this caliber. … I’m very excited to have all my friends and family out supporting me next week. It’s really going to make me remember how lucky I am to be able to play this game and just remind me to have fun out there.”
The Rebel junior first teed off Monday morning for day one of the tournament that plays all the way through Sunday. The field plays two rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, before being cut down to a field of 64 for match play to determine the victor. Match play rounds will be televised on FS1.
