The candidate forums sponsored by Oxford and North Mississippi’s chapter of the League of Women Voters began this week and will run through July 29. Over the weekend, there was a change of venue for one of the forums.
On July 25, candidates running for Mississippi House of Representatives in Districts 5 and 10 are scheduled to speak to potential voters and their constituents. The forum was scheduled to take place at the Lafayette County and Oxford Public Library, but will now take place at the Chancery Court Building located on the downtown Square. The date and time will remain the same.
This forum has drawn extra attention after District 5 Democratic candidate Carl Robinson walked into a Potts Camp medical clinic and shot and killed his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide on July 16. Robinson had been served divorce papers prior to the incident.
Incumbent John Gary Faulkner and Jacqueline Smith will speak, as will District 10 candidates Amanda Campbell, Bobby Dailey, Nolan Webb, Brady Williamson, Kelly Morris and Robert Gray, Jr.
Candidates running for the District 1 Lafayette County supervisor’s seat will speak Tuesday at the library from 6 to 8 p.m. Current District 1 supervisor Kevin Frye is not seeking reelection, as he is running for the District 9 seat in the Mississippi State Senate.
Other supervisor forums taking place this week include the second of three District 3 candidate forums on Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Gordon Center in Abbeville. The third will be held on Aug. 1 at the College Hill Community Center. A District 2 forum will be held on July 29 at the library, as will a District 4 forum at the Lafayette Civic Center.
