The Beacon to close on May 10 after 66 years

- The Beacon is a popular eatery in Oxford.
The Beacon restaurant, a cherished local institution that has served the LOU community for more than 60 years, will be closing on May 10.
Owner Tony Mize confirmed the restaurant’s closing Friday morning to the Eagle.

Established on April 15, 1959, by Tony’s parents, Flem and Charlene Mize, the restaurant became a staple in Oxford, known for its Southern hospitality and home-cooked meals, including its popular “Big Bubba” hamburger steak.
Rumors of the Beacon closing started to circulate last year; however, it was not confirmed until the restaurant announced it was closing on its Facebook page on April 24.
“Hello everyone I want to start by saying it has been with great pleasure we got to spend so many years building friendships and family’s with all of our loyal customers because of you all we have made it this far .I am sad to inform you all but the Beacon has come to an end. Tony has spent many many long tired days and years here and is ready to retire. Please come by and tell him congrats and spend the last few days with us we love you guys and will miss yall dearly ..BUT ONE THING WE HAVE FAITH IN IS GOD WHEN HE CLOSES ONE DOOR HE OPENS ANOTHER ..”
The Beacon is located on North Lamar Boulevard, across from the Dollar General, and will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday until May 10.
