Healthgrades, the No. 1 site Americans use when searching for a doctor or hospital, evaluated approximately 4,500 hospitals on 31 conditions and procedures groups, such as heart attack and total knee replacement, for the most recent three-year period.

Hospitals could not opt in or out or submit their own data.

According to the organization, if all hospitals performed at the level of America’s 250 Best Hospitals, approximately 174,081 lives could be saved each year.
