The Oxford Police Department Victim Services Program was recognized recently by Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch with a statewide award for exceptional service to crime victims
OPD received the Outstanding Service to Crime Victims Award during a ceremony on Tuesday.
Fitch recognized several individuals and organizations across Mississippi for exceptional service to crime victims and efforts to combat human trafficking.
Police Chief Jeff McCutchen thanked Fitch for her unwavering commitment to supporting victims of crime and human trafficking.
The Victim Crimes Unit was formed during the pandemic when there was a surge in domestic violence cases, which resulted in an increase in domestic-related homicides in the community.
Valerie Booth, a social worker who initially joined the department as a clerk, was promoted to lead the new unit.
With funding from a 10-week FBI training course for Victim Services Coordinators, Booth launched a comprehensive support system for victims of violent crimes. The model ensures that victims receive immediate resources and guidance, which was lacking in previous systems that left individuals to navigate the legal process on their own.
McCutchen praised the team of victim advocates and officers who support the program.
“We also extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible team of victim advocates — Valerie Booth and Christina Rogers — as well as to every officer who serves with compassion, professionalism and dedication,” McCutchen said. “Your work changes lives, and we are grateful for all that you do.”
