A new Parkinson’s support group is launching in the Oxford area this April, offering essential support and resources for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers.

The Oxford Parkinson’s Support Group will hold its first meeting at 1:30 p.m. on April 10 with regular meetings scheduled for the second Thursday of each month at the Oxford University United Methodist Church in Room 240.

The new group aims to provide connection, education, and exercise—three vital components to help improve quality of life for those impacted by Parkinson’s. Meetings will include social time, expert presentations and use of the church’s walking track to promote physical wellness.

“There is a great need for a support group in the greater Oxford area, and we are trying to meet that need for Parkinson’s patients as well as their caregivers,” said Kathy Pearson, who co-founded the group with her husband, Ashton Pearson. “The closest support groups to our area are in Jackson or the Memphis area, so we hope to fill that void.”

Ashton Pearson was diagnosed 12 years ago, and he and Kathy are working to bring resources and a sense of community to Oxford residents facing similar challenges.

Joining the Pearsons in leading the group are Michelle Cohen, an occupational therapist and group exercise instructor, and Elizabeth Burklow, a speech therapist and University of Mississippi instructor with extensive experience in treating Parkinson’s patients.

Monthly guest speakers will be scheduled to address a range of topics relevant to Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers. From speech therapy to mobility exercises, the goal is to offer actionable advice, local resources and emotional support.

Attendees can also take advantage of free church parking at several locations, including lots on University Avenue, the Tyler Avenue parking deck and the South 9th Street parking garage.
