Not just another moving company or furniture store, Cedar Bucket is an innovative all-in-one solution for college students, their out-of-state parents, and anyone in the Oxford community looking for a little extra help with their furniture needs.
Co-founded by local couple Greg and Ellie Grace Driver, Cedar Bucket is more than just a business—it’s a nod to the rich history and traditions of the town. The couple have created a service that caters to the unique challenges faced by students and their families, while also serving the broader community with a fresh take on consignment retail.
For out-of-state parents sending their children off to college, moving can be a stressful and expensive experience. From navigating long drives to hauling bulky furniture up multiple flights of stairs, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. That’s where The Cedar Bucket steps in, offering a full-service, hands-free solution that takes the hassle out of the equation.
Whether it’s picking up a piece of furniture that was bought online for the student’s dorm room or apartment or offering short-term storage for belongings over the summer months, Cedar Bucket ensures that families don’t have to worry about a thing.
Students simply schedule a pickup, and their items are transported to the store’s warehouse. When August rolls around, the furniture is delivered right to their doorstep, making the transition into their new space a breeze.
“We’re all about ease,” Greg Driver said. “We handle it all—from storing the furniture to moving it, to eventually dropping it off at the door. We’ve created a service that takes the guesswork and travel expenses out of the process.”
In addition to its moving and storage services, Cedar Bucket is a resale consignment store, offering a space for the community to buy and sell high-quality, gently used furniture.
Cedar Bucket offers free pickup anywhere in town. Whether it’s an antique or a valuable piece of furniture that someone no longer needs, the store will come to you, pick it up, and bring it to their showroom. There, it’s professionally marketed, listed online, and showcased for potential buyers.
All consignment pieces are kept on display for 120 days, giving customers plenty of time to find the right buyer. The process is easy, transparent, and efficient.
“We’ve had so much positive feedback,” Driver said. “People really wanted something like this, and we’re happy to bring it to life. Our viral video got over 250,000 views, and the excitement has been incredible.”
One of the most fun aspects of Cedar Bucket is the historic significance of the building itself. Originally established in 1979 by Brooks and Mary McPhail, the original Cedar Bucket furniture company became known for its cedar furniture and of course, the “world’s largest cedar bucket.”
When the Drivers found out that the iconic cedar bucket—which once sat proudly in front of the property—had been moved to a private hunting camp, they knew they had to bring it back. After tracking it down and giving it a much-needed facelift, the bucket was returned to its rightful home, making it a focal point of the new business.
“We wanted to preserve the legacy of the property and the name,” Driver said. “This town means a lot to us, and we’re proud to keep its history alive while offering something new that the community really needs.”
Cedar Bucket is a family-owned, family-operated, and alumni-run business. Greg, an Ole Miss graduate, and Ellie Grace are passionate about supporting the local community, and they’ve made a point of hiring hard-working students from the university.
“We’ve already hired 20 students from KA and Sigma Nu,” Greg said.
In addition to the team of students, Cedar Bucket has a fleet of six trucks at its disposal.
Cedar Bucket is ready to officially open its doors on May 1, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Oxford Chamber of Commerce. The community has already begun to take advantage of the store’s services, with many consigning their furniture or scheduling moving services for the summer.
