Local fire departments and community members thwarted a grass fire behind the athletics facilities on the Lafayette County School District campus on Wednesday.

At about 5:30 p.m., the Lafayette County Fire Department and Oxford Fire Department and Forestry community members responded to a grass fire behind the baseball and softball facilities adjacent to the Oxford Country Club.

The scene was contained and cleared by approximately 7:30 p.m.

“We are grateful for the quick response and collaboration among all responders as they worked to control the fire, dig trenches to avoid its spread, and save the structures,” the district stated on a social media post on Thursday.
