The Mississippi Makers Challenge, an annual competition organized by the Mississippi Manufacturers Association, is currently underway, celebrating the state’s rich tradition of craftsmanship and innovation.
This year, the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council in Oxford is actively collaborating with local creative businesses to highlight the significant economic contributions of the arts sector to the regional economy.
The first phase of the program features public voting, where community members can cast their votes daily to support locally made products.
Among the featured participants is Satterfield’s Pottery, a family-owned enterprise based in Oxford. They offer a complete line of ceramic dishware and home decor, as well as custom crafts designed by customers. Their dishware is microwave safe, dishwasher safe, and oven safe.
Oxsicles, another Oxford-based business, is also participating in the challenge. Known for their handcrafted ice pops made from fresh, all-natural ingredients, Oxsicles sources locally whenever possible, supporting regional agriculture and promoting healthy, delicious treats within the community.
Talitha Kumi Jewels, renowned for their unique handcrafted jewelry, is also part of the lineup, showcasing the diverse range of creative enterprises contributing to the local economy.
In addition to these businesses, other locally featured products include Blue Delta Jeans, Exploradora Coffee, and Wonderbird Gin, each representing the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit of the Oxford community.
The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council points to these businesses not only as platforms for artisans to showcase their work but also emphasizes the economic impact of creative industries in Mississippi. By supporting and promoting local artisans, YAC plays a pivotal role in fostering economic growth and cultural enrichment in the region.
Community members are encouraged to participate in the voting process, which runs from Feb. 10 to Feb. 21, to support their favorite local products. Visit https://msmakerschallenge.com/vote/ to vote for your favorite products.
The top 16 vote-getters will advance to the bracketed rounds, culminating in the announcement of the winner on March 20 at the Mississippi State Capitol.
