Gardening events popping up with spring around the corner

With spring just a hop, skip and a jump away, Master Gardener events and gardening activities around Lafayette County are picking up. Here is a list of upcoming events for gardeners and anyone who just loves the outdoors.

Master Gardener Help Line: The Master Gardeners host a Gardening Help Line on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Experts answer all your horticultural questions with a quick answer, or they’ll research your issue and get back to you. If you’ve got questions on pruning, crape myrtle bark scale or getting your garden going, just give them a call.

Arbor Day Tree Giveaway: Feb. 7 at 8 a.m.: The annual Arbor Day tree giveaway starts at 8 a.m. this Friday at the Arena again this year (70 F.D. Buddy East Pkwy), offering the following tree and vine varieties: Santa Rosa Plum, Honey Crisp Apple, Bell of Georgia Peach, Bartlett Pear, Muscadine, Bald Cypress, Hardy Pecan, Red Maple, Sugar Maple, White Oak, Nutall Oak, White Flowering Dogwood, Persimmon, Southern Magnolia and Red Crepe Myrtle.

Lunch and Learn at the Union County Extension: Noon on Feb. 12. The Union County extension at 112 Fairground Circle in New Albany is hosting a Lunch & Learn on ‘Winter Pruning & Cleanup’. Phone 662-534-1916 to register.

Oxford Community Garden Plots:  If you’re looking for a place to garden this year, come to a meeting at the Stone Center (across the street from the Oxford Pool) at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m. At the meeting, you’ll be able to reserve plots at the Community Garden with 4’x8’ plots priced at $25, 8’x10’/11’ at $35, 10’x16’ at $45 and 16’x 16’ at $50. Pay by cash or check.

Lafayette County Bee Club: The club has been renamed the Magnolia Bee Club and will be meeting at 6 p.m. on Feb. 25 at the Extension Office.

Spring Lecture: The first lecture will be held at noon on March 6 at the Lafayette County and Oxford Public Library where Lauren Adamz will be speaking on “Kitchen Gardens.” Adamz has studied horticulture, botany and floral design. Her garden consultation business “Hearth and Garden” is a new adventure still in the early stages. Other lectures will be held on April 3 and May 1.

Komorebi Bonsai: Zach Adamz hosts fun and interesting classes on Bonsai styling and care. He will host a Bonsai Essentials workshop at 10 a.m. on March 22nd at 10 am: Sign up online.
