A police chase ended eventually with the arrest of a man who fled after Lafayette County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to pull him over for careless driving.

At about 6:45 p.m. on Jan. 24, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for careless driving. The driver, Antonio Mendez, 24, pulled the vehicle into Rascal’s Gas Station at the intersection of Highway 7 South and Belk Boulevard. His passenger, Briane Kreston got out of the vehicle after the deputy found she had an active Circuit Court warrant from Desoto County. Mendez then drove off.

The LCSO said Mendez did not appear to have a permanent address locally.

Deputies pursued Mendez down Highway 7 South. They came up on a vehicle wreck and the pursuit went right through the middle of the crash. Mendez later stopped on the shoulder of the road and fled on foot.

He was later apprehended with help from the Oxford Police Department and charged with felony fleeing. He was taken to the Lafayette County Detention Center where he was booked on a $40,000 bond; however, the Mississippi Department of Corrections placed a hold on him.
