The Oxford Police Department recently opened its new headquarters at 9 Industrial Road, marking a significant milestone for the department.
The $12 million facility, funded through a mix of local, state, and federal resources, offers state-of-the-art features and space for the department’s 131 employees, including 89 sworn officers.
Funding for the project included $7,061,454 from bond proceeds and state contributions of $6 million through House Bill 1353 and two allocations under House Bill 603-28. A COPS Grant helped cover the cost of new equipment for the building.
The facility, described as “substantially completed” at a recent board meeting, took about a year to construct—a timeline considered quick for a project of this scale. While minor construction tasks remain, the building is fully operational and while some are still “living out of boxes,” most of the department is getting settled into its new home.
“This $12 million project is a huge investment in one singular department by our city leaders,” OPD Chief Jeff McCutchen said. “It sends a strong message for recruitment and retention, showing that our city values and supports law enforcement in a way that’s not always common in today’s society.”
The new headquarters includes several modern amenities designed to improve operations and employee well-being. The training room can seat about 75 people and is equipped with smart boards and a kitchen to accommodate various departmental needs. The Victim Services area offers a safe and welcoming space with a family room, a conference room and a child-friendly area complete with a play space and a TV. The lobby features bulletproof glass and a large display screen to enhance security and communication.
Other highlights include a gym with new fitness equipment to support physical and mental wellness among officers and a dispatch area with three consoles, adjustable lighting and air conditioning for better working conditions.
The evidence room is designed for efficiency and security, with separate spaces for felony and primary evidence, rolling shelves, and pass-through lockers for proper storage and organization. Additionally, there is a secure entrance for transporting suspects, which keeps them isolated from the rest of the building.
The administrative offices are arranged in the same wing for convenience, and the facility also includes 10,000 square feet of space for future expansion.
