The Oxford Film Festival is set to return for its 22nd year, highlighting stories, storytellers, and filmmaking talent.
The festival will take place Feb. 27 through March 2, at the Malco Commons, with related events at other local venues.
“This year, we’re refocusing on going back to our roots,” said Mike Mitchell, Board President of the Oxford Film Festival.
This year’s programming team reviewed over 600 film submissions and selected approximately 60 films for the event. Films will be grouped into thematic blocks running Thursday night through Saturday, with winners replayed on Sunday.
“We’ve got 10 or 11 award categories this year,” Mitchell said. “In past years, the festival had a variety of visions for categories and awards. Now, we’re returning to a more focused approach, making it simpler and more enjoyable for both filmmakers and audiences.”
Elisabeth Alexander, the festival’s manager, said organizers have made it a goal to have a film with a Mississippi connection a part of every block of films.
“The films may have been made here, feature a Mississippi filmmaker, or involve someone who lives in Mississippi,” she said.
The festival will open with two short films: “Chasing Rabbits” by local filmmaker Michael Ferris Smith, and “A House for My Mother” by Ben Nero. Both films feature strong ties to Mississippi. A discussion with the filmmakers will follow, and a VIP/Sponsor event will cap the evening.
Friday’s lineup includes feature films, shorts, and experimental works in two to three film blocks. A filmmaker party at the Powerhouse will follow the evening screenings.
On Saturday, family-friendly films will kick off the day with two children’s film blocks. The festival will culminate Saturday evening with a feature screening, an awards ceremony featuring the Princess Hoka statuettes by artist Bill Beckwith, and a social event at El Charro.
Sunday afternoon will showcase reruns of the award-winning films.
In preparation for the festival, alumni events were held in October, November, and January. These featured free screenings and discussions with filmmakers to build awareness and engagement with the local community.
The festival is seeking volunteers and new members to support the event.
Memberships are limited and start at $100 for individuals, with options for families and businesses. Memberships give unlimited access to the films and events all weekend.
Individual tickets are expected to go on sale by the end of January.
