Oxford girls won 7-0 in a mercy rule match while it took Oxford boys extra time to defeat Horn Lake 3-1 in high school soccer at Oxford Middle School on Thursday.
Caroline Love got the Chargers on the board first followed by a goal by Jane Irwin to make the score 2-0. Madison Strum added a goal from 18 yards on an indirect kick to make it 3-0 after the Horn Lake goalkeeper was whistled for punting the ball outside the box.
Conley Clark made it 4-0 before Irwin and Strum each added their second goals to make it 6-0 at halftime.
Oxford’s final goal was the result of a Horn Lake own goal.
In the boys match Horn Lake scored first on a penalty kick before Oxford tied it later in the first half on a Carson McCready screamer from about 40 yards out.
A scoreless second half sent the match into extra time. In the first 10-minute period the Chargers’ Jerry Dudley was fouled in the box and Asiel Rodriguez converted the penalty kick to give Oxford its first lead. Colton Webb added a goal to make it 3-1 at the end of the first extra time period, where the score would remain.
