Oxford narrowly escapes worst of winter thunderstorms

Lafayette County received about 2 inches of rain Saturday as waves of storms rolled over the area from around 2 to 11 p.m.

While the rain caused local flooding and scattered downed trees and limbs, Oxford faired way better than other Mississippi and Texas counties.

Around 8:30 p.m., during the heaviest rainfall, the Oxford Police Department announced it had shut down the ramp from Highway 7 S onto University Avenue due to flash flooding.

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department reported a tree fell in the road on Highway 315 near Prophet Bridge around 7:30 p.m. and about an hour later, a tree was down on Highway 30 caused during a traffic collision.

Two people were killed during the storms – a teenager was killed in Adams County when a tree fell on his home and two people were injured in Franklin County, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

Another person was killed in Texas during a tornado.

According to the NWS, 19 tornadoes were reported Saturday in Texas and Mississippi, mostly causing tree damage. Two homes were affected in the Jackson area. And farther south, near Bude and Meadville, the Old Zion Baptist Church was destroyed, and a citizen was trapped in a nearby house.

More than 200,000 power outages were reported across Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.
