Salvation Army Red Kettle Bells return to Batesville

For years, the familiar sound of Salvation Army Red Kettle bells had been missing from Batesville’s busiest spots. This holiday season, however, that changed thanks to Stan and Mandy Froberg, a couple with a passion for giving back.

Stan, a seasoned bell-ringer with over 50 years of experience, comes from a long line of Salvation Army service. His grandfather and great-grandmother were Corps Officers in Tampa, Florida – and Stan rang bells with them as a child.

The Frobergs found themselves in Batesville after a series of life challenges. They were travelling from Florida to Colorado in 2016 when their car broke down.

“We had no way to get home,” Mandy said. “We didn’t know anyone, but the kindness of the people here kept us going so we decided to make Mississippi home.”

About two years ago, the Frobergs discovered the Oxford Salvation Army Store. A couple of months ago, they spoke to store manager Bobette Wolesensky on how they could get the bells ringing in Batesville.

“I told them we needed bell ringers,” Wolesensky said.

Wolesensky received approval from Kroger in Batesville to have the Red Kettles in front of the store after being denied by the Batesville Walmart.

The Salvation Army in Oxford serves Lafayette, Yalobusha, Marshall, and Panola counties

And offers a range of resources for local residents, including assistance with utility bills and medications. The Red Kettle Campaign is their largest fundraiser.

The Frobergs’ journey from hardship to hope makes their return to bell-ringing even more meaningful. They have volunteered to ring the bell outside Kroger every Saturday from 2–6 p.m., spreading holiday cheer and collecting donations for those in need.

“We’re not paid to do this,” Mandy said. “We do it because it’s important to give back. We’re just here to say hi, wish people a Merry Christmas, and maybe inspire a little generosity.”

Their first day ringing bells at Kroger was a success.

“Stan loves talking to people—he’s definitely not shy,” Mandy laughed. “Even our 15-year-old daughter, Signey, joined in, chatting with kids while we spoke to the adults.”

The Frobergs are thrilled to see Batesville rally around the effort.

“We’re so grateful to Kroger for letting us be here,” Mandy said. “The response has been amazing. People are kind, whether they donate or not.”

The Frobergs hope their story inspires others to volunteer as bell-ringers.

On Dec. 14, the Zeta Beta Amicae, Archonettes and Amicettes will ring bells at Walgreens in Batesville from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
