Oxford now boasts a new addition to its local media landscape — a free over-the-air digital TV station.
Broadcasting on UHF with a 15kW signal, WEBU-LD covers approximately 207,594 people, making it an accessible and exciting entertainment option for residents throughout the region.
Owned and operated by Ellington Broadcasting LLC, a Mississippi-based company established in 1988 by David Ellington, the station combines national programming with local content. The station’s main channel, 22.1, is affiliated with the COZI TV Network, an NBC Universal property known for its round-the-clock programming of classic TV shows. Viewers can enjoy beloved sitcoms like Frasier, The Nanny, and Roseanne, alongside dramatic staples such as Columbo, Monk, and Little House on the Prairie.
WEBU-LD’s three digital subchannels (22.2, 22.3, and 22.4) provide even more variety, featuring DEFY TV, THE365, and OUTLAW TV, respectively.
For many in Oxford and Lafayette County, WEBU-LD represents a return to the simplicity and affordability of free television. All that’s required to access the station is a basic indoor or outdoor digital TV antenna, available for as little as $15 at local retailers. For cable subscribers using MaxxSouth, the station is conveniently located on Channel 7.
“You don’t need internet or complicated streaming services to enjoy WEBU,” Ellington said. “You can just plug in a digital antenna and instantly get access. And it’s free.”
The station broadcasts live high school sports, including Oxford Charger football. Northwest Mississippi Community College and Delta State University football games are also featured, along with exclusive coverage of Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) state championship events.
Ellington plans to also air local events such as Oxford’s Christmas parade.
“This will be the first time we are covering a parade,” he said.
The station also aims to cover significant local meetings and happenings of public interest.
“If there’s a big community event or important meeting, we can do that,” he said.
Ellington’s passion for broadcasting dates back to the late 1980s, when he built his first station in Webb, Mississippi, with a second-hand tower and a hands-on approach to local TV.
Now, with his son Chad Ellington co-owning the business, David is excited to see WEBU thrive in a new era.
“Our mission has always been about connecting people,” he says. “From showcasing school events in the early days to now providing a blend of national and local programming, it’s all about community.”
WEBU-LD Channel 22 is poised for growth, with plans to add two more digital subchannels in the near future. As more viewers rediscover the benefits of free, high-definition over-the-air TV, Ellington hopes to become a central part of Oxford’s media landscape.
