Cofield’s Corner

I have never seen a football field get stormed that fast. Whoosh, and the green grass disappeared in a moment. We needed that.
Oxford and Ole Miss are special and intertwined in a dance that speeds up when we know joy together.
Up University Avenue they paraded those students of ours. Yelling, “Hotty Toddy” as they turned onto South Lamar and headed for the Square. Cars were honking and the crowd on foot joined in the revelry.
With folks waiving from Square balconies, our students took Hemingway’s goalposts and propped them against Faulkner’s courthouse.
In these “best of times,” the twin heartbeats become one in perfect rhythm as we dance the night away.
The students went wild.
We are still a small town, but one with more to do than all the counties surrounding us put together.
I don’t know what happened in those county seats Saturday night, because we were over here celebrating our special union between town and campus that dates back to 1848 and is the jewel of Mississippi.
