An Oxford woman was recognized recently by the Mississippi Quilt Association as a Legacy Quilter.
Legacy Quilters are over 65 years old and show outstanding quilting skills and contributions to the quilting community.
Mary Lou Owens, of Oxford, was one of 12 quilters named Legacy Quilters.
Owens became a quilter after she attended a local quilt tea event held by the Piecemakers Quilt Guild in Oxford. She bought lots of books and became an avid quilter.
Owens was influenced by a lady from Arkansas, Irma Gail Hatcher, who wrote lots of Baltimore album patterns. They were all applique’. She quilted through the tragic events of Sept. 11 as a way to deal with the news. She has done a lot of hand applique’ but likes machine applique’.
