The Oxford Board of Aldermen approved renaming a section of College Hill Road after the Mistilis family.

City Engineer John Crawley presented the proposed name change to the Board during their regular meeting on Tuesday at City Hall. He said the Oxford Post Office was requesting the renaming the section of College Hill Road that dead ends at the airport property line, near where King’s Steakhouse was located.

“They said it gets confusing for carriers to have three different sections known as College Hill,” Crawley said.

However, the Post Office requested the road be named Mid Valley Cove, after Mid Valley Pipeline which has had a business on that road. Alderman Jason Bailey asked if they could instead, name the road Mistilis Cove since Angelo Mistilis’ popular restaurant, Mistilis Restaurant was once located in the area.

Famous for its hamburger steaks, Mistilis opened the restaurant in the 1960s. Angelo Mistilis died in 2021.

The Board unanimously approved the name change. Mayor Robyn Tannehill also had a few choice words to say about the U.S. Postal Service.

“If the Postal Service proves to be as terrible as it has been, I’m sure they’ll never find the road they asked us to rename,” she said. “It is the worst-run organization in the United States.”

After the meeting, Tannehill clarified that she was talking about the U.S. Postal Service and not the local employees at the Oxford post office.

“I don’t believe it is the fault of the one clerk typically working at our post office, but the entire system that is struggling to meet the demand, yet raising prices,” she said.
