The Inaugural Memphis Pizza Festival happens this Saturday, Sept. 21, at Agricenter International, where over 20 of the finest local pizza makers will showcase the largest variety of pizza ever offered at one place in the Bluff City.
There will be full pies, slices, and other types of delicious pizza-related items on hand at this all-ages, ultimate pizza experience – with plenty of sampling, panel discussions, and other interactive activities.
The live music line-up will include some accomplished musicians with connections to Oxford.
“I’ve been excited about it,” said Oxford native and vocal phenomenon Karen Brown, who now resides in Memphis. “Me and my band are all excited about it. And I like that it’s a family event too, and that anybody can come.”
An Oxford High graduate, Brown grew up in and around the Flint Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Etta, where she began developing her talent at age 4, and sang at community events throughout the area until leaving at 17.
Another Oxford artist, singer/guitarist Davis Coen is part of the music line-up, and will be accompanied by Memphis blues/funk/soul group Just Groovin’ Experience. Coen has released 10 albums and toured numerous times in Europe, as well as on the U.S. blues festival circuit, with two appearances at the King Biscuit Blues Fest in Helena, Arkansas.
Coen and company have performed at several venues around the Oxford Square, including The Green at Harrison’s and Rooster’s Blues House, and recently released a single recorded live at Proud Larry’s, called “Basement with the Blue Light.”
Randy Ferguson, also a longtime contributor to the music community, will round out the afternoon lineup, with his band Peavine Railroad featuring Hill Country Blues guitar virtuoso Trenton Ayers.
The band has been in the studio over the past year working on their debut forthcoming album “Long Train To Memphis.”
Also representing Oxford is festival organizer Darryl Parker, who has run the Oxford Blues Fest for over a decade and been a supporter of north Mississippi artists his entire life, having grown up locally.
“As the organizer of the Memphis Pizza Festival, I’m passionate about creating an experience where every slice brings joy, connection, and a taste of what makes Memphis special,” Parker said.
