MHP responds to four fatal wrecks during Fourth of July weekend

The Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to four fatal wrecks over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

From 6 p.m. on Thursday to 6 a.m. On Sunday at midnight, MHP issued 6,474 citations – 876 were cited for no seat belt. Troopers arrested 149 people for DUI and investigated 141 crashes that resulted in 45 injuries and four deaths.

The fatal crashes occurred in Pearl River, Scott, Sunflower and Pike counties.

On July 4, Jocelin Sanchez, 23, of Tylertown was killed on Highway 13 in Pearl River when another vehicle collided with her.

On July 5, Steve Epps, 51, of Jackson was killed when his vehicle went off the road on Interstate 20 in Scott County and collided with a tree.

On July 5, Kenneth Willies, 40, of Memphis, was killed when his vehicle hit a ditch and overturned on Highway 3.

On July 6, Dustin Denton, 40, of Tylertown, was killed when his vehicle hit a tree and overturned on Highway 51 in Pike County.

MHP has not released individual Troop data from the holiday weekend.
