Heat Advisory for Oxford

Published 2:44 pm Sunday, June 23, 2024

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory until 9 p.m. tonight and another from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for Monday. The advisory includes the city of Oxford and Lafayette, Yalobusha, Monroe, Calhoun, and Chickasaw counties.

As temperatures rise, it’s crucial to stay hydrated and remain indoors in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Avoid direct sun exposure, and regularly check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors. If you must be outside, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes and limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours.

Recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and take immediate action if symptoms appear. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas during outdoor work. If someone is overcome by heat, move them to a cool, shaded spot and seek emergency help immediately by calling 911.
