Lafayette defeats Pontotoc 12-2 in series opener

The Lafayette Commodores take the opening game of the series over Pontotoc 12-2 on Thursday.
The Commodores strike first with a run in the first as Pontotoc walked in a run.
Lafayette’s (23-7) starter Aleck Farmer, made quick work of Pontotoc through the first two innings, only allowing a hit.
The Commodores opened the game in the second with base knocks by Farmer, Houston Morgan, Balin Bishop, Tanner Harris, and Connor Counts. Lafayette scored nine runs in the frame to go up 10-0.
Pontotoc got on the scoreboard in the fourth with two runs on a sacrifice fly and a groundout to make the score 10-2 Lafayette.
Lafayette added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Jack East that made the score 11-2.
Farmer worked 5.0 innings and surrendered two runs on a hit with five walks and four strikeouts.
In the sixth, Lafayette brought Waller Smith to the mound to face Pontotoc. Smith tossed an inning and allowed no runs on a hit with no walks and three strikeouts.
The Commodores added their final run in the home half of the sixth as the 12th run came in on a walk.
Lafayette will return to the field on Saturday at Pontotoc for the second game of this series. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
