The Oxford Chargers step back onto the diamond on Friday night as they play host to Germantown to open their 7A playoff run. The first pitch is set for 7 p.m.
Oxford finished the regular season with an overall record of 19-9 after sweeping Corinth last week. Head coach Cade Hoggard sat down with The Oxford Eagle to discuss the team going into the playoffs.
The Chargers have not taken the field in almost a week heading into this series. Oxford has been hard at work preparing.
“Last game was Friday,” Hoggard said. “So it’s a long layover, especially when we’re used to playing the Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday schedule. However, we’ve had some good practices.”
This year’s squad has a veteran-led lineup going into the playoffs.
“We’re fortunate this year to have several seniors and some returning role players/starters that have been in this situation before,” Hoggard said. “Our team has a great group of senior leaders. Focus has been great. “
Oxford has been through the grind of a tough season and facing 7A opponents to prepare them for Germantown. Germantown comes into the series with an overall record of 20-6.
“7A North is a very deep, very competitive classification,” Hoggard said. “Every team is good enough to win any given day. Germantown is a well-coached team with some very talented players. I think it will be a great series. We just have to make sure we play our brand of baseball and execute when given our opportunities. Should be a great series.”
The first game of the series will be at 7 p.m. on Friday in Oxford. The second game will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Germantown. The third game will be at 7 p.m. on April 29 in Oxford.
