Lafayette Commodores defeat Starkville 6-5 Friday

The Lafayette Commodores defeated Starkville 6-5 on Friday night at home.
Starkville opened the first inning with two runs.
Lafayette (20-7) answered with two runs of their own in the first on a hard-hit base knock to right field off the bat of Connor Counts who scored both runs to tie the game at 2-2.
The Commodores starter Tanner Harris retired Starkville in the second and the third.
Lafayette opened the fourth with a triple by Lawson Fortner and Foster Crockett got on base on a dropped third strike. The bases got loaded on a walk for Brody Breithaupt flied out to right field that brought home Fortner as the Commodores went up 3-2.
Lafayette added two more runs in the fifth to go up 5-2 over Starkville.
Harris worked 5.0 innings and surrendered four runs (two earned) on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
The Commodores brought Jack East to the mound in the sixth. East tossed 2.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits with no walks and no strikeouts.
Lafayette regained the lead in the sixth on a double by Breithaupt. The Commodores went up 6-5.
Breithaupt finished the game going 3-for-4 with three doubles a run and two RBIs.
Starkville tied the game in the sixth by scoring three runs of their own.
Lafayette looks ahead to the 5A state playoffs.
