If approved by Gov. Tate Reeves, Mississippi’s back-to-school sales tax holiday this summer will be three days long and be two weeks earlier.

The sales tax holiday would begin at midnight July 12 and end at midnight July 14, giving parents three full days this year to save a bit of money while shopping for their children’s clothes and school supplies.

The original legislation, authored by Sen. Walter Michel, had just Friday and Saturday as the sale tax holiday days. However, it was amended in the House to include Sunday, and the Senate agreed to that change on Friday. 

Michel told lawmakers the bill was important due to schools starting earlier. Oxford School District and Lafayette County School District students will return to school on Aug. 1. 

The back-to-school sales tax holiday currently occurs during the last weekend of the month.

A sales tax holiday is a temporary period when sales taxes are not collected or paid on purchases of specific products and services. 

The back-to-school sales tax holiday includes articles of clothing, footwear or school supplies if the sales price of a single item is less than $100. For a list of eligible and non-eligible items, visit the Department of Revenue at www. dor.ms.gov.

The amended legislation will be sent to Reeves for his signature. If approved, it will be in effect on the date the bill becomes law.
