The University of Mississippi is delaying the start of the spring semester due to the ongoing hazardous driving conditions.
On Wednesday evening, the university announced that all university operations and all activities are canceled for Thursday and Friday due to road conditions and walkways being covered in ice and snow.
“On Sunday afternoon, we will reassess the conditions of the campus, city, and county and inform employees about the status of reporting to campus next week,” Chancellor Glenn Boyce in an email.
The Oxford and regional campuses will delay the start of the spring semester until Jan. 25.
Hazardous conditions and extreme temperatures continue with the current forecast predicting temperatures to remain below freezing until Sunday.
University facilities crews need sustained above-freezing temperatures and space to operate to effectively clear a layer of ice covering roads, parking lots, and sidewalks on campus, according to Boyce.
Students have been urged to delay returning to Oxford until Tuesday.
